Chikurachki Weekly Update for 9/7/07

Current Chikurachki status from KVERT:

CHIKURACHKI VOLCANO 50°19′N, 155°28′E; Elevation 1,816 m
CURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE: ORANGE

The eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 6 km (or 19,700 ft.) ASL are possible. The activity of the volcano could affect low-flying aircraft.

According to visual data by pilots of a helicopter and observers in the area of Ebeko volcano, ash explosions rose up to 3.2 km (9,800 ft) ASL. According to satellite data, ash plumes extended from 30 to 160 km (19-99 mi) from the volcano to the north-east on August 31 and September 01, and to the south and south-east on September 03, clouds obscured the volcano on the other days.

Chikurachki volcano is not monitored with seismic instruments. KVERT has satellite monitoring and receives occasional visual observations of this volcano.

The eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 6 km (or 19,700 ft.) ASL are possible. The activity of the volcano could affect low-flying aircraft.

According to visual information from Podgorny (20 km or 12.5 mi to the south-south-east from the volcano), eruption of the volcano began on August 18, 22:00 UTC, ashfall was noted in Podgorny at that time and on August 19-20. Ash plume extending about 100 km (62 mi) to the south-east at a height 5 km (16,400 ft) ASL was observed by pilots on August 20, 1:40 UTC. Ash plume extending about 160 km (99 mi) to the north-north-east at a height 3 km (9,800 ft) ASL and ashfall on volcano Alaid were noted by volcanologists on August 21. According to satellite data, ash plumes extended 60-120 km (37-74 mi) to the south-east on August 19-20 and to the north-east on August 21, clouds obscured the volcano on the other days.

Eruptive activity of the volcano was noted. Ash explosions up to 6 km (or 19,700 ft.) ASL are possible. The activity of the volcano could affect low-flying aircraft.

According to satellite data, ash plume extended about 120 km (74 mi) to the south-east on August 19. According to the last visual observations, no eruptive activity of this volcano was noted on August 12 and 14.

Chikurachki volcano is not monitored with seismic instruments. KVERT has satellite monitoring and receives occasional visual observations of this volcano. Eruptive activity of the volcano was noted on April 18 last time.
