Current Anatahan status from HVO-CNMI:
Anatahan Monthly Update issued Aug 18, 2007 12:27 MPT Volcanic-Alert Level NORMAL – Aviation Color Code GREEN
Report Prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey. Seismometers on Anatahan recorded low levels of tremor with occasional small, local earthquakes. Anatahan was visited on August 11. Photos show the crater is still fuming from a location on the south side of the bottom which still has green-colored standing water. MODIS imagery has shown a weak gas and steam plume emitted from Anatahan when the island is visible. During normal easterly winds, these gas emissions should be blown west of CNMI and Guam. During more northerly winds, the Anatahan gas plume will be blown towards CNMI and Guam and be experienced as a sulfur-scented haze. EMO will issue volcanic haze advisories when appropriate. Access to the island may be restricted by the CNMI government Check with Emergency Management Office of the CNMI government to get the latest information. Seismic Network Status: AFOK, ANA2, and ANNE stations on Anatahan, SARN on Sarigan, and SAP2 on Saipan are operational. contact information: Marianas duty scientist (808) 967-8815 http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/cnmi
